Curriculum and learning
All our class groups are small with appropriate levels of support from qualified Teachers of the Deaf and Educational Assistants. We are able to provide individual timetables in classes which are tailored to meet the needs of individual pupils.
All pupils have access to a child-centred, broad balance curriculum including the National Curriculum. The curriculum is differentiated to enable children to build on strengths and interests whilst developing skills and knowledge. All our pupils are disapplied from studying modern foreign languages but where appropriate they will be entered for British Sign Language at CACDP Levels 1 and 2.
This year sees the introduction of our new 14 to 19 Curriculum where in addition to the National Curriculum pupils will be given the opportunity to gain qualifications in
- Child care
- Basic construction
- Woodwork
- Hair and Beauty
- Small animal care
- Horticulture
Curriculum and learning
At the Royal School for Deaf Children Margate we believe that communication is central to each child’s development. Each child has individual needs and we use a child centred approach which enables our pupils to develop their communication and language using systems which are appropriate to them.
A full range of communication modes are used which include Objects of Reference, Picture Exchange System (PECS), British Sign Language (BSL), Sign Supported English (SSE) and speech. Communication is also supported by our Speech and Language Therapy department..
All staff receive training in British Sign Language at Signature levels 1, 2 and where possible level 3.
